Beattie and Ely

Q and A with Big Brother Beattie and Little Brother Ely

What is was like waiting to be matched with each other?

E: I didn’t know what was going on, I was a little nervous!

B: I was excited but also nervous! I didn’t know what to expect but couldn’t wait to meet Ely. I was wondering what Ely would be like, how we would get along, and what our relationship was going to be like. It was really hard to not have preconceived notions!

What it was like meeting each other for the first time?

E: I felt shy at first, but then we went bowling and asked questions about each other. After that I felt better.

B: Ely was very shy, but quickly warmed up! I had big plans for everything we were going to do together and all we were going to talk about, but learned that it was best to be patient, listen, and let Ely open up when he was ready.

What do you two enjoy the most about your match?

E: I probably enjoy trying out new things the most.

B: What I enjoy most about our match is watching Ely grow and mature. Having been matched with Ely over the past five years, his interests and communication styles have changed over time and it has caused me to learn to adapt as a mentor. I have learned a tremendous amount from Ely, including patience, humility, and how to be a better communicator. Being able to be a part of his life has been very rewarding and an honor.

Favorite match activities?

E: Decades arcade, Jump, playing basketball and video games.

B: My favorite activities with Ely are when we try new things. It's always great to see Ely try a new experience like a new food or sport and see his hesitation turn to enjoyment. It is really rewarding when we try something new and he asks to do it again!

Hopes for the future/ new goals you are working on together.

E: Snowboarding! Trying new food.

B: My hopes for our future together are that we can continue to learn from each other and try new experiences together. Continue to build and adapt our relationship as Ely grows.
