Q&A from Khadra, Findia & Frances

Big Sister Khadra and Little Sister Findia’s match shines with warmth, laughter, and authentic connection. From the very first moment they met, the two instantly clicked, discovering shared interests, stories, and a mutual passion for learning and community. As their friendship has grown, so has their confidence in each other and in themselves. Hear more about their match in the Q&A below, and from Findia’s mom on how BBBS has made a lasting impact on their family.

From Big Sister Khadra

  1. Tell us about first meeting your Little. What do you remember? When I first met my Little, I was slightly nervous because I wasn’t sure if she would like me. I remember meeting her and her mom for the first time, and everything went so smoothly. Findia and I immediately found things we could both relate to, and I left that meeting feeling genuinely excited. It was such a joy to see how naturally we connected, and I was pleasantly surprised by how comfortable and welcoming the entire process felt.

  2. Why did you become a Big? I decided to become a Big because, as the oldest sibling in my family, I’ve always enjoyed being a mentor and a role model. I used to wish I had an older sibling myself, so I wanted to offer someone else what I didn’t have, which is a dependable, encouraging presence to lean on. I also wanted to give back to the community and help a young person feel supported and seen. It felt like a natural extension of who I am and how I’ve always cared for those around me.

  3. What is your favorite memory so far? One of my favorite memories is when we went to my first UVA football game together. My Little was already a seasoned UVA fan, but it was my first time experiencing a game like that. We had such a great time cheering, laughing, and soaking in the energy of the crowd. It was one of those days that felt so special and easy, full of pure fun and connection.

  4. What has been the most rewarding thing about being a Big so far? The most rewarding part has been getting to know my Little and seeing her grow into herself. She’s younger than my siblings, but the bond we’ve built feels like family. It’s been incredible to watch her confidence grow and to know that I’ve played even a small role in that. As someone who grew up feeling underrepresented, being part of this program has given me just as much inspiration as I hope I’ve given her.

  5. Tell us about Findia’s job with PHAR this summer and her experience with our Teen Employment & Financial Literacy Program. This summer, Findia worked with PHAR through the Teen Employment and Financial Literacy Program, and I was so proud of her. She was able to make a real impact in her own community and gain skills that will serve her well into the future. From what she shared with me, it was an empowering and eye-opening experience that helped her see how much she’s capable of achieving.

  6. What would you say to someone who is considering volunteering as a Big? I would tell them to absolutely go for it. Even if you’re unsure, take the leap! It’s one of the most fulfilling experiences you can have. Being a Big has helped me connect more deeply with the Charlottesville community, build meaningful relationships, and see firsthand how mentorship can change lives. The bond between my Little, her family, and me has truly become something I’ll treasure forever.

From Little Sister Findia

  1. Tell us about first meeting your Big. What do you remember? We first met at the BBBS office on the Downtown Mall. I just remember talking with her a lot, especially about things we might do together.

  2. What do you like about having a Big? I like having someone there for me when I need them.

  3. What are three words you would use to describe your Big? Funny, cool, chill.

  4. What is your favorite memory so far? When we went to the arcade a few months ago!

  5. Tell us about your job with PHAR this summer. What was the best part about working? The best part about my job was learning more communication skills and being able to open up more. I worked in the community, passing out flyers and talking to residents.

  6. Tell us about participating in our financial literacy sessions this fall. Which session have you enjoyed the most? The financial literacy sessions taught me a lot about saving money. The second session, when we had pre-work, was nice. The pre-work helped focus the conversation, and I felt more prepared to participate.

From Parent/Gaurdian Frances

  1. What do you remember about first meeting Khadra? I thought they were so similar and that Khadra was the perfect match for Findia!

  2. How has the BBBS program made an impact on your family? BBBS has made a huge impact. Both of my kids have had Bigs in the program. It’s great for them to have someone to reach out to. Khadra has been there for Findia and offered that one-on-one time that’s so special!

  3. What does Findia enjoy most about Khadra? They’re just alike and so in sync. Findia loves just talking to Khadra.

  4. What would you tell another family who is thinking about signing up? Sign up! It makes a difference to a child to have that one-on-one time, especially if they have siblings.
