Big & Little, Real Talk: Q&A with Alexys and Ziah
Alexys and Ziah were matched in 2020, right in the middle of the pandemic—proving that even in uncertain times, connection and mentorship can thrive. What began as virtual meetings soon grew into one of our strongest matches, built on trust, shared experiences, and a deep commitment to showing up for one another. Over the past five years, Alexys has been a consistent and inspiring presence in Ziah’s life, helping her see her own strength and potential. Their story is a powerful example of the lasting impact a caring adult can have, and how BBBS relationships often grow into lifelong friendships.
How did you first meet, and what was your first impression of each other?
Alexys: When I first met Ziah, I thought she was very shy. As we spent time together, I realized that she’s actually very expressive! She just needed some time to warm up.
Ziah: We were matched during the pandemic lockdown, so our first meeting actually happened over FaceTime. Even though, I could tell she was incredibly smart and someone I can relate to. I found out she was pursuing her PhD at UVA, which honestly put me in awe. Nobody in my family has even been to college so meeting a woman of color doing something so powerful and ambitious made me admire her and I saw someone I could really look up to.
How has being part of Big Brothers Big Sisters impacted your life?
Alexys: I’ve gained a lifelong relationship and friendship with Ziah. I never imagined we’d grow this close, and I’m grateful to BBBS for supporting us and our relationship over the past 5 years.
Ziah: It showed me what mentorship can look like and reminded me that I’m not alone, especially when I was going through a hard time in my life. Being matched with someone who’s also a person of color helped me feel seen when everything felt unfamiliar. I had a hard time adjusting to the culture shock of me entering foster care, so having that connection gave me a sense of stability.
In Ziah’s Words
How do you think your Big has helped you grow as a person?
Having someone to look up to who’s already further along in life has helped the way I see my own path. It’s made me take myself and my potential more seriously.
What’s a goal you’ve set with your Big’s encouragement?
Setting myself up for college became a big priority for me. I’ve started thinking more serious about what I want my future to look like and Alexys has definitely played a role in that.
In Alexy’s Words
What’s the most rewarding part of being a mentor?
I’ve loved watching my Little Sister grow up! From a middle schooler to a graduating high schooler, I love seeing how mature she’s gotten over time. It’s rewarding to see her grow into a smart, motivated and passionate young lady.
What’s one challenge you’ve faced as a Big, and how did you overcome it?
I struggled with supporting Ziah after our match was interrupted for a few months. It was hard to see her going through her situation and not knowing how I could help her. I think during that season we became the most vulnerable with each other, and our relationship actually strengthened as we navigated it together.
What’s your favorite thing to do together on a typical outing?
Ziah and I love to eat and try new food places together! She recently introduced me to La Tolteca near Barracks.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve given (or received) in your match?
Not to force anything! Our relationship has evolved and grown over time. Our match became the most fruitful by meeting each other where we were and being patient.
